Physiological Studies on Salt Tolerance of Ten Rice Varieties I. Growth and Yield Aspects*

Abstract

The extent of reduction in grain yield, as also of adverse effects on other characters, caused by salinity at EC value of 10 mmhos/cm in ten, varieties of rice studied showed that Getu and SR 26B were the most tolerant varieties and gave highest grain yield per plant under salinity. B-3 and Type 26 were moderately susceptible types while IR-8, Jaya, CR 66–56, Cauvery and Saket-3 were highly susceptible ones, in increasing order. Saket-I, which could not establish itself and ‘ thrive in salinized soil, was the most susceptible variety. Due to its high yield potential in normal soil and relatively low reduction in yield among the highly susceptible genotypes, IR-8 gave almost as good yield under salinity, as did the moderately susceptible types.

Correlation studies indicated that the adverse effects of salinity on paddy yields seem to be modulated through its ill effects on earing and grain setting processes.
