Five wheat genotypes were grown in pots at four levels of soil sodicity. Free proline, extracted from the leaves at the tillering phase, was found to increase in all of the varieties with increase in sodicity stress. There were, however, remarkable genotypic differences regarding the level of proline accumulation. Kharchia, a tolerant variety of alkalinity stress, accumulated significantly larger concentrations of free proline.
