Abstract

Water stress created by polyethylene glycol (PEG, 6000 mol. wt.) resulted in a considerable rise in proline accumulation and appreciable increase in free amino acids content in leaves and roots of maize plants. However, proline accumulation in leaves was relatively much higher than in roots. Reduction in protein and RNA contents of leaves as well as of roots during water stress was also observed but DNA content was relatively less affected. The results are discussed in the light of current literature.
