Salt Tolerance in Grapes. II. Effect of Salinity on Mineral Composition of Plants

Abstract

The experiment conducted in pot culture with nine salts each having three concentrations viz., 0.15%, 0.30% and 0,45% and with three cultivars namely Anab-e-Shahi (Seeded), Beauty seedless and Pusa Seedless indicated that the amount of nitrogen, phosphorus, sodium and chloride increased, while potassium, magnesium (except for magnesium salt) and calcium (except for calcium salt) decreased. The increase or decrease was proportional to the concentration of salts applied. Among the various chloride salts CaCl2 promoted more chloride accumulation in grape leaves. Anab-e-Shahi and Beauty Seedless are more susceptible to high concentration of NaCl, while Pusa Seedless, on the other hand, is most sensitive to CaCla. Varietal sensitivity to various salts has been discussed and correlated with the accumulation of specific ions in the leaves.
