Abstract

Summary Five barley varieties, along with rye grass (Secals cereale) wera grown at ECe levels of 2.2, 5.4, 8.4 and 12.3 mmhos/cm. Based on plant height and dry matter production, barley was more tolerant than rye grass. Amongst barley tolerant varieties, Vijay had higher Na/K ratio than susceptible ones. Higher salt tolerance in Vijay at early growth stage in the presence of higher Na might be due its higher genetic potential of Ca uptake, which might be helpful to maintain its cell wall integrity.
