Summary Maturity index in maize has been worked out, using different approaches. Multiple regression equation of yield as a function of moisture content of plant components gave a good index of maturity. Cumulative heat unit was the other criterion showing promise. Both these criteria gave sustained results for the two maize crops sown on different dates. Retaining the cobs on the stalks for ten days after harvest could be adopted with advantage of 3–4 q/ha additional yields, especially where the crop is to be harvested earlier than dead ripe stage.
