Testing Germination and Seedling Growth By an Inclined Glass Plate Blotter Method

Abstract

Summary A method of seed germination which gives highly uniform and reproducible results and enables easier recording of root and shoot growth of seedlings is described. In this method seeds are germinated on moist blotters on glass plates which ate kept in polythene packets containing 20–30 ml of water and provided with two rows of holes on the back side. The plates are arranged at 66° angles on plastic dish-stands which can be very conveniently placed in germinators or in the room for the required number of days. Day-today observation of the progress of germination can be made without disturbing the germinating seeds. The method has been very conveniently employed for testing germination and seedling growth of seeds of our common field crops, vegetables and flowers.
