Abstract

Photosynthesis, carbohydrate and nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium uptake in Hybrid bajra-1 end its parents, viz., Bil-3B (male) and Tift-23B (female) was investigated under field condition. The rate of photosynthesis as measured by oxygen evolution did not indicate any narked differences in the varieties. The accumulation of starch during day and its translocation from leaves during the night was higher in the hybrid. The nitrogen content per plant as well as its uptake per day was higher in Hb-1 than its parents, both at early growth stage and the flag leaf stage. However, the phosphorus content and its uptake was lower in Hb-1 during early vegetative growth upto 29 days. Most of the uptake of N, P and K was completed around the flag leaf stage.
