Abstract

Esterase isozymes in leaves or male and female clones of Populus ciliata Wall. collected from two altitudinal clones (provenances), were resolved through polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Provenance specific variation was observed in esterase isozymes. Male and female genotypes exhibited differential response to the environment of the clonal source. Provenance related variation was also noticed in total soluble proteins and esterase activity. The isozymic variation is discussed in relation to the site conditions of parental habitats.
