Breeding for Desirable Leaf Types in Cotton (Gossypium Hirsutum L.)

In hirsutum cottons leaf size is generally associated positively with boll size and negatively with boll number. In order to achieve a desirable leaf type with higher seed-cotton yield, segregating lines originating from intervarietal crosses of G. hirsutum were subjected to selection pressure during F₄ and subsequent generations. Two strains, 69 and 595B, were isolated which possess small, thicker leaves with bigger boll size and higher seed cotton yield.
