Abstract

In Vitro selection for salt tolerance, using embryo derived calli of ‘Basmati’ rice (CV, 27814) and its subsequent regeneration was examined. Prolonged exposure of callus to the toxic concentration of NaCl (1%) led to the arrested growth in majority of the calli. However, a small number of them maintained healthy and stable growth through-out the three selective passages, indicating tolerance to salinity. Plants were regenerated from such lines. The regeneration frequency in the lines selected for salt tolerance was more when compared to unselected (control) lines.
