The changes associated with protein and hemagglutinin activity in castor bean seed germinated for 96 hr showed that the breakdown of water-soluble proteins requires an intact embryo in castor bean. The early soaking period exerted a profound influence on its utilization by the devel oping embryo. The embryonic axis did not show direct control over the development of acid phosphatase activity and GA was found to a substitution for it.
