Correlation Between Endogenous Hormone Level and Fibre Elongation in Upland Cotton (Gossypium Hirsutum, L.)
Abstract
Developing sseds of eight hirsutum strains/varieties differing in their mean fibre length were assayed for the endogenous levels of auxin and gibberellin like substances during their fibre elongation phase. It is seen that varieties possessing relatively longer fibres as well contained higher levels of auxins and gibberellins. Reverse was the situation noticed for shorter fibre varieties. It appears that auxins and gibberellins exert their influence on fibre elongation independently.
