The pericarp layer of the intact developing grain of wheat (Triticum aestivum L. cv. Shera) is involved in creating partial grain sink activity by influencing starch accumulation in the outer region of the endosperm. It is suggested that the effect is mediated by the oxygen generated in this layer as a result of photosynthesis.
