Abstract

Heat tolerance of four Indian and two Mexican varieties was measured by heat resistance meter based on chemiluminiscence. The critical temperature at which the plant begins to inhibit after glow has been taken as index of heat resistance. Distribution patterns within each variety were determined and it was observed that the varieties Sharbati Sonora and Pusa-52 showed single peak, Sonalika and Sonora-64 were characterised by double whereas Pusa-4 and Lerma Rojo showed triple peaks. The distribution curves within same variety predict wheather the variety comprises of monogenic or heterogenic seeds. These studies help in the selection of proper varieties suitable for growing under high temperature conditions.
