Perlette grapevines were subjected to salt stress for chlorides, sulphates and carbonates of sodium, calcium, magnesium and potassium, individually in the concentrafion of 0.15%, 0.23% and 0.30%. The proline content in the leaves of salt stressed vines decreased initially but later on it accumulated in all the vines that survived the stress applied. The role of proline as a possible active metabolite in stress metabolism is discussed.
