Abstract

Among 42 high yielding and 46 traditional rice varieties 3 to 5 fold variation was apparent in the percentage of very good grains with more than 1.18 specific gravity. Vaigai, Krishna from high yielding and Bam 3. FR 43-B from traditional group showed high spikelet number per panicle with high percentage of very good grains. No significant negative trend between spikelet number per panicle and very good grain per cent was evident suggesting the'possibility of realising varieties with high percentage of very good grains along with greater number of spikelets per panicle for stable and sustained grain yield.
