Growth and developmental aspects in relation to yield of mungbean (Vigna radiata L; Wilczek)

Studies on leaf area, leaf area index, branch number, flower number, fruit set and yield was undertaken of five mungbean (Vigna-radiata (L) Wilczek) cultivars. Plant characters such as leaf area, higher number, of branches per plant, high flower number and fruit set contributed to the better yielding ability. It was also found that the varieties, which produced higher grain yield continued to increase in dry weight till pod development stage. It may be concluded from the study that a high yielding mungbean variety should possess large leaf area, high branch number, high flower number and better pod set in addition to having superior yield components.
