Seedlings of maize and sesamum were grown up to 30 days in half Hoagland solution carrying 0, 4, 8, 16, 24 and 32 ppm sulphur, in sand culture. Higher dry matter was obtained by all the doses of sulphur, maximum being at 8 ppm concentration. At 0 and 4 ppm levels, deficiency symptoms like slendering of stalks, yellowing and spotting of young leaves were noticed in both the crops.
Sulphur concentration in maize and sesamum increased with incresing doses of sulphur but nitrogen and phosphorus content showed a deceeasing trend (upto 8 and 16 ppm sulphur in maize and sesamum). With higher sulphur levels, their concentration increased. N/S and P/S ratios in both the crops decreased with increasing levels of sulphur.
