Fifteen deep water rice cultivars were evaluated for kneeing ability under North Bank Plains Zone situation of Assam. Six cultivars viz, Negheri bao, PJNB 96–12, Amana bao, Sonamukhi, PJNB 96–10 and PxN54 possessed top kneeing ability.
The present research all over the world in deepwater rice has refuted the earlier concept that rice must be inherently tall to withstand deepwater (above 1 meter). It is now realized that not only this trait, but also the trait ability of deepwater rice to knee is equally important, particularly when the flood water recedes. Since, flood is a chronic one in Assam, this trait of deepwater rice is of tremendous value. Varieties for deepwater rice areas must have kneeing ability to keep the first three leaves above the water level to trap solar energy for photosynthesis (Vergara
