Studies on nitrogen metabolism of salinity stressed field pea (Pisum sativum, Linn. Var. Arvensis)

Abstract

Field pea (Pisum sativum, Linn. var. arvensis, Linn.) grown in soil cultures was artificially salinized with a mixture of NaCl and CaCl3 (1:1) to ECe 4 and 8 at 40 and 80 days after showing. After 15 days of saliniza-tion root and shoot were analysed for nitrogenous fractions and some free amino acids. NR and GDH enzyme were assayed. Salanity disturbed the accumulation pattern (s) of nitrogenous fraction, leading to decreases in total and protein nitrogen but increased the soluble forms like Noa3 and NH+4 nitrogen. Activities of NR and GDH were also suppressed.
