Flowering in pineapple was observed as a result of sequential uprising of different metabolites i.e. sugars, ascorbic asid, proteins and nucleic acids. The increased synthesis of these metabolites may be brought about by application of different flower inducing chemicals like ethrel, planofix and calcium carbide to the pineapple bud in right concentration at the right time. Ethrel @ 100 ppm or 25 pom mixed with 0.04 per cent calcium carbonate and 2 per cent urea was found to be very effective in enhancing the synthesis of different metabolites. Along with the increased synthesis of different metabolites there were structural changes in the apex which developed ultimtely into an infloresence. Duration of flower bud differentiation in summer was comparatively shorter than in winter.
