Modulation and nitrogenase activity in Vigna mungo in response to seed-soaking and root-dressing treatments of Moringa leaf extract

Abstract

Effect of ethanolic extract of Moringa oleifera leaves was found to be beneficial for nodulation and nitrogenase activity in Vigna numgo, when applied by seed-soaking or basal treatment (root-dressing). Both the methods of application increased the nodule number per plant, whereas the seed-soaking treatment quickened the maximum nodule initiation. Fresh and dry weight of the nodules were also increased to a greater extent with the application of both the type of treatments. The lower concentrations (i.e. 0.04% and 0.08%) were found more effective for the activity of nitrogenase as compared to higher concentrations (i.e. 0.16% and 0.24%) in case of seed-soaking as well as root dressing. None of the higher concentrations of the extract was found inhibitory to the above parameters.
