Effect of sulphur deficiency on leaf area ratio and dry matter production in sunflower (Helianthus annuus Linn. var. Morden), related with their nitrate reductase activity in leaves
Abstract
Studies on the effect of sulphur deficiency, on leaf area ratio, dry matter production and its relation with nitrate reductase activity of leaves of Morden variety of sunflower were made in sand culture. Leaf area ratio was found to be higher in S-deficient plants as compared to sulphur supplied plants. The leaf area ratio was also found to be linked with the nitrate reductase activity of plants. Sulphur deficiency caused a marked reduction in the nitrate reductase activily in sunflower. An inverse link between leaf area ratio and dry matter production was recorded. S-deficiency caused a marked reduction in the dry matter production by plants.
