Remote effects of bap and ethrel on growth and senescence in Y-branched mungbean (Vigna radiata (L) Wilczek) plants

Abstract

It was intended to investigate the effect of 6-benzyl amino-purine (BAP) and ethrel (ETH) on the growth and leaf senescence in mungbean. Y-shaped mungbean plants were prepared having identical leaves and branching under pot culture. BAP and ethrel were applied separately on one of the branches of Y-shaped plants to see the effects with respect to the other untreated branch. Suitable controls were kept. BAP delayed the senescence of the leaves in the treated branch as well as in the untreated branch. On the other hand, ETH hastened the senescence in treated as well as untreated branch. The interpretation of the results have posed an open question since the translocation is only possible through root system in this case.
