Abstract

Plants of summer mungbean (Vigna radiate L. Wilczek) var. K-851 received foliar spray of 0, 0.025, 0.05, 0.1 and 0.2% aqueous pyridoxine solution either at flower-initiation (35d) or at pod-initiation (45d) stage. Various growth characteristics, namely plant height, root length, root nodule rumber, leaf number, fresh weight and dry weight at 45 and 55d and net assimilation rate (NAR) at 35–45 and 45-55d interval were studied. Among foliar treatments, 0.1% pyridoxine solution applied at flower-initiation stage invariably proved optimum for above parameters at both samplings, except root nodules which degenerated at 55d. Thus, flower-initiation stage seems to be the critical period for pyridoxine application. At this stage, competition starts between vegetative and reproductive growth for utilising pyridoxine per se.
