A field trial conducted with soybean varieties indicated their relative tolerance to water logging. The stems of the flooded plants developed splits m outer cortical tissues near the water surface. The stem cortical splits developed adventitious roots which perhaps helped in respiration of the soybean plants under water logged condition.
