Photosynthetic efficiency of individual leaves of a potato plant was studied under field conditions. The 4th leaf, with low stomatal resistance and high net photosynthetic rate was most productive. The upper leaves were 37 percent more efficient in CO2 fixation. The high stomatal resistance and low photosynthetic efficiency observed in lower leaves is attributed to ageing.
