Effect of low light at different stages of development on growth and yield of rice

Abstract

Low light (50% sun light) from 40 days after planting to flowering reduced total dry matter of early rices, Swarnaprabha and Ratna by 43% at flowering in both dry and wet seasons by reducing photosynthetic rate (Pn by 31 to 35%), stomatal conductance, total nitrogen and soluble protein per unit leaf area. Low light at this stage had more adverse effect on yield than that from flowering to harvest. Swarnaprabha is better adapted to low light than Ratna at both the stages with high leaf area expansion and ch! b and least reduction in Pn and yield under subdued light.
