Seedlings of two rice varieties differing in sensitivity to salinity were grown in nutrient solution without or with 50mM NaCl. After salinization for three days, the third youngest leaves were cut transversely into five longitudinal segments and were analysed for concentrations of potassium, sodium and chlorophyll pigments. Both the varieties showed intersegmental variations and reacted differently to NaCl treatment for the parameters observed. The mid portion of the third youngest leaf of normally grown seedlings showed greatest difference with low in potassium/sodium ratio and high chlorophyll concentration in tolerant type.
