Utilizing fructose 1, 6-biphosphate and β-gtyeerophosphate as substrates, winged bean seeds showed similar pattern of acid phosphatase activity during germination and early seedling development The activity increased in the imbibed seeds. Except a decrease on day 2, the cotyledons maintained continuous increase in the activity up to day 9. On day 5, the activity increased 7 to 9 fold in the plumule and radicle compared to day 2 embryonic axis. The enzyme activity on day 5 and 9, in the plumule and radicle exceeded the activity in the cotyledons. Role of acid phosphatases in relation to inorganic phosphorus level during germination of winged bean has been discussed.
