Physiological responses of pigeonpea (Cajanus cajan L.) Genotypes to water stress

Abstract

Data collected from water stressed plants indicated a very sensitive response of Acetylene reduction assay (ARA.) followed by the rate of photosynthesis. Respiration rate of root and nodules showed the least reduction. Large seeded genotypes (ICPL-312, 85024. 83024, 84045 and 83027) proved to be more sensitive than small seeded ones (ICPL-4,155,85037, 83006, H-77-216, UPAS-120 and T-21), whereas among the small seeded, genotypes having indeterminate growth have edge over determinate type for better drought tolerance. Relative water content and water retention values were also considerably higher in these type.
