Relationship between ear dry matter at anthesis and grain yield in a rainfed sorghum hybrid

Abstract

Sorghum hybrid CSH-6 was grown under rainfed conditions to find out the association between drymatter accumulation at anthesis and grain yield and its components at harvest for better understanding of grata yield stability. Results of four seasons revealed high positive correlations between ear dry matter at anthesis and total dry matter produced at anthesis, grain yield, grain number per unit area and harvest index. There was moderate negative correlation between leaf dry matter at anthesis and 1000-grain weight. Mean number of grains at harvest per unit dry weight of ear at anthesis did not vary across seasons. The results indicate that (i) higher ear dry matter at anthesis is an important crop variable for grain yield stability across seasons and (ii) grain yield stability would be higher with less leaf area during grain filling than at present under rainfed conditions.
