Abstract

Two genotypes of mungbean (Vigna radiate Wilczeck) differing phenotypically were subjected to water stress at lowering stage. The leaf water potential dropped to -1.18 MPa and -1.42 MPa in pentafoliate and trifoliate respectively at moderate level when soil moisture content depleted from 10 per cent to 5,5 per cent. Acetylene reduction activity of nodules, photosynthesis, stomatal conductance and RWC in leaves were affected adversely in both the genotypes, likewise reduction in leaf area was markedly higher in trifoliate (56%) than in pentafoliate (18.9%). Reduction in grain yield was also greater in trifoliate (53%) than in pentafoliate (34%), indicating better tolerance to drought by the latter.
