Leaves from flowered shoots of the cultivars Langra and Mallika contained higher non-reducing sugars, total soluble sugars, alcohol insoluble nitrogen, total nitrogen and nitrate reductase enzyme activity while in case of non-flowered shoots, a higher reducing sugars, starch, alcohol soluble nitrogen and C/N ratio were recorded. A high C/N ratio in non-flowered shoots throughout as compared to flowered shoots in both the cultivars indicates greater accumulation of carbohydrates in these shoots and thus may possibly lead to floral induction. Lower level of non-reducing sugars in Mallika as compared to Langra during November to January may indicate the capability of these varieties to form flower buds at a comparatively lower threshold level of non-reducing sugar content.
