The glossy cultivars, SiA 805 and SiA 1135 and 2 non-glossy cultivars, SiA 326 and SiC 24 of foxtail millet (Setaria italica) were exposed to stress at vegetative, flowering and grain filling stages by withholding irrigation. Stress at all stages decreased the leaf water potentials, crop growth rates and yield especially in non-glossy cultivars. Stress at flowering affected the growth and yield more than at grain filling and vegetative stages. Sugar accumulated in all the cultivars under stress more being in glossy cultivars.
