Abstract

Water soluble sugar in lucerne was highest in flower, collar, root, leaf and stem at flowering and with advancement in age (grain initiation) there was a steep drop in sugar content indicating high demand of sugars for grain growth. Moderate dark respiration showed close relation with grain growth in lucerne genotypes (SS 627 and Composite-2). Genotypes SS 627 and Composite-2 with moderate dark respiration, high sugar translocation efficiency and potential ability to utilize mobilized collar sugar in flower and grain growth produced high seed yield.
