Abstract

The distribution of nitrogen within the potato (Solatium tuberosum L.) plant in relation to planting date was studied under short-day conditions. Delayed planting decreased N accumulation and reduced leaf area resulting in yield reduction. Higher N accumulation in optimum planting was associated with larger leaf area and higher tuber yield. The total N and crude protein content of tubers declined with delay in planting. Reduced N accumulation in leaves could be partly responsible for the reduced leaf growth in delayed planting.
