Imposition of salt stress caused accumulation of choline and betaine in chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.). Increasing salt stress enhanced the accumulation. Betaine was found to be relatively nonlabile in contrast to choline. The levels of betaine and choline in chickpea plants might serve as useful cumulative indices of the salt stress.
