Alteration Patterns of Hill Activity, Peroxidase Activity and Sugars of Pigeon Pea During Maturation And Senescence

Abstract

Hill activity and sugars increased significantly from young to mature leaves of pigeon pea but decreased sharply at leaf senescence. However, Hill activity of open flowers as well as mature and senescent pods were much lower than flower buds and immature pods. Amount of sugars registered a gradual increment from the flower buds to pod-setting stage; during senescence the pod wall showed a sharp fall whereas maturing seeds exhibited about two-fold increment. Peroxidase activity increased constantly during leaf maturation and much higher level was noticed during senescence. However, pod wall and seeds were unique in showing a decreasing trend in the activity of this enzyme during pod development.
