A study was conducted with potted plants to determine the chilling sensitivity in rice with six cultivars viz: Culture 1, IET 6155, IR 50, Boro 1, Kolaboro and Johaboro. The roots of 25 day old seedlings were treated with chilled distilled water (0 to 1°C) for 2 minutes. All the cultivars showed similar growth response to cold treatment Both shoot growth and tiller number were reduced. However, cultivar differences were observed in case of relative leaf water content. Proline content in the leaves increased by low temperature treatment; maximum being in Johaboro and IET 6155. N, Pand K content, total soluble sugar, protein and chlorophyll content also got reduced as a result of low temperature treatment.
