Growth Behaviour of Floating Rice Under Flooded and Non-Flooded Conditions

Abstract

Habiganj Aman II - a floating rice variety was grown under flooded and non-flooded conditions to observe the growth behaviour of floating rice and its importance in grain production. Compared with the plants under non-flooded conditions, the flooded plants exhibited greater internode elongation but less accumulation of dry matter in the internodes during the vegetative phase. This indicated the utilization of assimilated carbohydrate for internode elongation. The flooded plant, however, accumulated more dry matter than the non-flooded plants during the reproductive phase. The higher dry matter content of the vegetative parts at flowering possibly contributed to the lower grain sterility and consequently higher grain yield of rice under flooded than under non-flooded condition.
