The culture filtrate of P. ultimum showed the maximum activity of polygalacturonase (PG) followed by ploymethyl galacturonase (PMG), polygalacturonate transeliminase (PGTE) and pectin methyl transeliminase (PMTE). The activity of pectin methyl esterase (PME) was also quite high. Amongst uninoculated (healthy) root stocks, there existed no correlation in the activity of pectinolytic enzymes with disease resistance or susceptibility. On infection, the activity of PG, PMG and PME increased, whereas, the activity of PGTE and PMTE was noticeably detected which otherwise was absent in uninoculated (healthy) plants.
