Eighteen days old plants of two varieties of rice (Oryza sativa L.), Nona bokra (salt tolerant) and IR 5931-110-1 (salt sensitive) were transplanted in a saline (EC - 5.2 dS/m) and a non-saline (control) plot Two months after transplanting, total chlorophyll, chl. a, chl. b and chl. a/b ratio in the leaves were determined. Total chlorophyll and chl. a were higher in both the varieties and chl. b was higher only in Nona bokra grown in the saline medium compared to control. Chlorophyll a/b ratio was lower in Nona bokra and higher in IR 5931-110-1 grown in the saline medium compared to control.
