Differences in P absorption rates and efficiency of P utilization were studied in seven genotypes of groundnut at low level of phosphorus. The efficient cultivars did not show any deficiency symptoms at low P level, had higher absorption rates and more P in the tops than roots and produced higher total dry matter. The ratios of P/Fe, P/Mn and P/Zn were also higher in shoots of these cultivars. Differential response between these two groups for P appeared to be caused by differences in rates of absorption, translocation and utilization of P and accumulation of disproportionate amounts of Fe, Mn and Zn.
