The δ 18O values of the water in developing wheat grain showed a triphasic enrichment in H2, 18O as compared to that of irrigation water (−6.5%.) but was much less man the 18O values of atmospheric oxygen (± 23.5%). These results suggest that atmospheric oxygen is one source utilised by the developing grain and is linked with developmental metabolism of me grain.
