Partitioning Pattern of Biomass and Yield Components among Different Tillers of Rice

Green house experiment conducted during kharif 1991 with rice varieties Rasi (early) and Jaya (medium) indicated that the main shoot possessed large panicle, more number of spikelets and higher per cent of high density (HD) grain in comparison to the primary, secondary and tertiary tillers. Partitioning of biomass in the mother shoot was indentifled in the order of culm, leaf sheath and leaf blade in Rasi while Jaya showed higher in leaf sheath. Overall, mother shoot and the primary tillers had higher number of HO grains, harvest index and yield in both the varieties. Secondary and tertiary tillers contributed little to grain yield resulting in low harvest index.
