A field experiment was conducted during kharif (Rainy seasons of 1988–89, 1989–90 and 1990–91 with 3 cultivars of soybean (Bragg, JS 75–46 and PK 472) and proven Bradyrhiwbium inoculants (Pant Nagar, Bangalore, IARI-1, nafed and Jawahar). The Bradyrhizobium inoculants admirably enhanced the number of nodules, dry weight of nodules and dry shoot weight at 60 days and yield of soybean as compared to uninoculated control. Among different inoculants, IARI-1 established its superiority over Bangalore and uninoculated control, however, the remaining inoculants were found at par with IARI-1. Cultivars of soybean differed significantly with respect to dry weight of nodules, shoot dry weight and yield, while the number of nodules, remained at par. The interaction between inoculants and cultivars with respect to number of nodules, dry weight of nodules, dry shoot weight and yield were found significant. The interaction indicate that the maximum nodules (50.0/plant) were noted when cultivar PK 472 was inoculated with Pant Nagar inoculant, whereas dry nodule weight observed when cultivar Bragg inoculated with Pant Nagar/IARI-1 inoculants (111.2 and 107.8 mg/plant) and PK 472 inoculated with Pant Nagar inoculant (109.8 mg/plant) and maximum dry shoot weight (5.5 g/plant) recorded with cultivar PK 472 inoculated with PantNagar inocultant. However, highest yield (22.6 q/ha) was recorded with cultivar JS 75–46 when treated with Jawahar inoculant.
