Nodulated pigeon pea (ureide symbiosis) and alfalfa (amide symbiosis) plants were exposed to acetohydroxymate (AHM), an inhibitor of urease, for 25 days. Chlorosis and reduced plant growth was observed in pigeon pea, wherase alfalfa was unaffected. AHM inhibited the allantoinase (EC. 3.5.2.5) activity resulting in accumulation of allantoin and decreased allantoate levels in all parts of the pigeon pea plants. Inhibitory effects are consequence of blockage in ureide catabolism due to AHM.
