Abstract

Notch -2 high lysine barley mutant, produced by ethylmethane sulphonate treatment of parent NP-113. develops an enlarged endospermic cavity, which results in a ‘Notch’ on the dorsal side of the grain during desiccation. This contributes to a decrease in grain mass. Constraints at the level of starch synthesis are responsible for accumulation of excess sugars in the apoplast of Notch-2 grains, which are likely to be diverted towards synthesis of lysophospholipids, which being highly cytotoxic in free state cause massive cell destruction around the apoplast.
